5 Simple Ways to Detox Your Body

After washing down a heaping slice of pumpkin pie with a large glass of eggnog, you probably feel like you need a detox.

Detoxing has become a trendy thing recently, but it’s an important way to keep your body functioning well. Before we can understand how to detox your body, let’s take a deeper look at what this means.

Your body has a natural detoxification process that works extremely well – most of the time. We run into trouble when the body gets bombarded with toxins from our food and environment. When we’re supplying the body with more toxins than it can manage, things can build up. Excess toxins are stored in fat cells (more reason to blast that excess fat).

When we talk about detoxing your body, we really mean that we’re helping your body’s natural detoxification system run smoothly. Here are five simple ways to detox:

  1. Cut back on dietary toxins

    The fewer toxins your body has to deal with, the better it will be able to handle the ones it does. The best way to allow your body to detoxify is to cut back on dietary toxins like pesticides, cigarette smoke, alcohol and processed chemicals. Make a plan to eat clean for a set amount of time, ideally two weeks or more. In simple terms, this means eating organic produce and limiting meat and dairy.

    Upping your vegetable intake may automatically increase your dietary fiber, but make an effort to eat as much as you can of this good stuff. The body doesn’t digest fiber. This is why it’s so effective at helping you use the loo. Fiber will help clean out your colon, which can be another source of toxins in the body.

  3. Drink more water

    If you aren’t already drinking the recommended eight 8-ounce glasses of water daily, start now. Drinking water helps detoxify by flushing toxins out through your urinary tract. Sip on water throughout the day for the best effect. Your body may need more or less water, but going with the recommended eight glasses is a good place to start.

  4. Exercise daily

    During your cleanse, it’s important to get regular exercise. This encourages blood to circulate through the lymph system, which can help enhance digestion, reduce tension and lubricate joints. When you get the blood flowing, toxins will also flow more freely from your body.

  5. Reduce your sugar intake

    Sugar is probably more harmful to your body than you know. Excess sugar intake is linked to obesity, diabetes, and heart disease. To put it simply, it is not good for your body. Remove excess sugars from your diet while detoxing to give your body the best chance of removing toxins. As you detoxify, be careful. Sugar addiction is real, and it can almost feel like you’re detoxing from alcohol or another drug. If you have a strong sugar addiction, you may want to consider weaning yourself off before going cold turkey.
